ความสาคัญของการปกป้องสิทธิในทรัพย์สินทางปัญญาที่มีต่อการส่งเสริมความคิดริเริ่มของมนุษย์ตลอดจนการพัฒนาความก้าวหน้าด้านวิทยาศาสตร์เทคโนโลยี และพัฒนาการด้านศิลปะและวรรณกรรมความเกี่ยวข้องกับทรัพย์สินทางปัญญาของบุคคล ธุรกิจ และองค์กรประเภทต่าง ๆ หลักกฎหมายไทยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับทรัพย์สินทางปัญญา ทั้งลิขสิทธิ์ สิทธิบัตร และเครื่องหมายการค้า รวมทั้งสนธิสัญญาระหว่างประเทศที่เกี่ยวข้องกับลิขสิทธิ์และเครื่องหมายการค้า เช่น สนธิสัญญา WTO TRIP’s และ Patient Cooperation Treaty บทบาทของ WIPO ในการส่งเสริมการปกป้องทรัพย์สินทางปัญญาระหว่างประเทศตลอดจนการบริหารให้เป็นไปตามสนธิสัญญาระหว่างประเทศที่เกี่ยวข้อง
